Payout of Accrued Time Policy (University)
Policy Statement
Upon resignation, layoff or retirement, Duke will pay out 100 percent of all accrued and unused vacation and discretionary holidays.
**Note: This policy does not apply to Postdoctoral Associates. Please refer to the Office of Postdoctoral Services for details about payout policies for Postdoctoral Associates.
Policy Details
University staff receive the following accrued and unused paid time based on the stated guidelines:
Leave action | Vacation | Sick Leave | Discretionary Holidays | Comments |

Resignation | 100% if service is greater than 90 days | None | 100% of Accrued and Unused | Paid in a lump sum at the current rate of pay |
Retirement: Hourly-Paid Staff | 100% | None | 100% of Accrued and Unused |

Retirement: Monthly-Salaried Staff | 100% | None | 100% of Accrued and Unused |

Layoff | 100% | None | 100% of Accrued and Unused | Accrued and unused time-off pay will not be provided in a lump sum payment. |
