Maria LaMonaca Wisdom has held multiple roles in higher education, including tenured professor of English, executive director of a humanities and faculty development institute at UNC-CH, and director (working with faculty PI Edward Balleisen) of "Versatile Humanists at Duke," an NEH-funded project to enhance doctoral education for students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. In her current role, she provides extra-departmental advising and coaching to Duke doctoral students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. She helps students navigate a wealth of interdisciplinary opportunities at Duke and beyond, develop awareness and competencies for different stages of doctoral training, and transition smoothly to meaningful professional roles post-PhD.
Maria is a Certified Professional Coach through the Business and Professional Coaching Program at NC State University (2019). She is currently pursuing an Associate-level credential through the International Coach Federation (ICF). She is a graduate of the Leadership Development Program at the Center for Creative Leadership (2012), and is focusing her coaching practice on helping doctoral students, faculty, and university staff adapt nimbly to multiple professional contexts, and develop resilience in the face of rapid changes in higher education.
