Wellness through the Senses
Explore the five senses to reduce stress, enhance resiliency, and promote overall wellbeing.
How can sound affect our health, well-being, and mood? In our busy lifestyles, we can easily be bombarded by pings, machines, car traffic, TV, radio, or construction. Noise pollution has been shown to increase feelings of stress and irritation, and can even lead to hearing impairment or sleep disturbance. We can do things to be just as mindful about the sounds we consume as we can with the food that we eat.
A few of the resources on campus that can help you find ease through sound:
- Arts and Health at Duke works with classically trained musicians to provide instrumental music in public spaces at Duke University Hospital
- Duke Performances has a host of musical performances offered at discounts to employees
- Take a few minutes to experience silence, visit spaces on campus such as the Cancer Center Quiet room, the Chapel, or multi-use prayer rooms
- Put on headphones and listen to sounds like waves of the ocean, rain, or your favorite song
