Using reusable water bottles is a great way to stay hydrated while cutting down your carbon footprint. According to a 2015 National Geographic study, the average American purchased about 346 plastic bottles per year, for a grand total of 111 billion bottles. Given that only 9% of plastics that year were recycled, this trend contributes to a massive issue of global plastic pollution which threatens species diversity, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, and creates shocking phenomena like the Pacific Garbage Patch.
By rejecting disposability and using your own bottle, you can help combat this problem. Duke’s campus makes using your own bottle easy, with many water bottle refilling stations throughout office and academic buildings. Also, if you drink a lot of coffee or tea, consider bringing your own mug or thermos! Duke incentivizes this practice by offering a 20% discount on your drink purchase if you bring a reusable cup to any Duke Dining location. Saving money and reducing plastic: a win-win!
