Fiber is a very important component of food that has several benefits that you might not want to miss. Fiber helps to regulate the body’s use of sugars, which helps to keep your hunger and blood sugar levels in check. Fiber can also reduce the risk of developing certain health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, diverticular disease, and constipation. Fiber can be in both soluble and insoluble forms, and both are found in different foods. Both types have beneficial functions:
- Can dissolves in water
- Helps lower glucose levels and lowers blood cholesterol
- Can be found in oatmeal, nuts, beans, lentils, apples and blueberries
- Cannot dissolve in water
- Helps food move through your digestive system, promoting regularity preventing constipation.
- Can be found in wheat, whole wheat bread, whole grain couscous, brown rice, legumes, carrots, celery, cucumbers, and tomatoes
