Duke Leadership Academy Coaches: Joy Birmingham

Joy Birmingham

Joy Birmingham recently joined the L&OD team at Duke, serving both the University and the Medical System, with over 20 years in the Management Training and Professional Development arena.  Before becoming a Specialist in Talent Development, Joy spent 10 years working with youth and adults in religious education and youth ministry in various church communities.

Having received her Master's Degree in Adult Education from NCSU, Joy spent the next 13 years at SAS, the largest privately held software firm in the world.  She began as a Management Trainer for the first five years at SAS and then designed and piloted Leadership Coaching Initiative by herself for one year.  The pilot was so successful that Joy was promoted to manager of the Performance Development Consulting Department, where she trained her previous T&D colleagues to coach leaders throughout the organization.  Joy was able to manage seven direct reports for the next seven years offering Manager and Employee Training, Team Consulting, Leadership Coaching, and Meeting Facilitation services.

For the past 3 years, Joy has served as a Professional Development Specialist in UNC's Training and Talent Development Department.  Joy was responsible for teaching all of the following Professional Development classes:  Time Management, Change Management, Advanced Communication Skills, Presentation Skills, Feedback Skills, Performance Management, Intro to the MBTI, Moving from Peer to Manager, Coaching 101, Advanced Coaching Skills, and Engaged Supervisory Training.  In addition to training, Joy was responsible for the project management of two large programs: Individual Leadership Coaching and our Online Learning Initiative.

Joy is a certified Coach by the Coaches Training Institute (CTI), as well as the MBTI, Firo-B, DiSC, PowerTalk, Gallop's StrengthsFinder, Ken Blanchard's Situational Leadership II and Situational Self Leadership, and in Kouse and Posner's Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) from their infamous Leadership Challenge Course.

Joy received her BA in Psychology and Religious Education from Belmont Abbey in Belmont NC, her first MA in Pastoral Ministry and Religious Education from Boston College, MA, and her second MA in Adult Education with an emphasis in Training and Development.
