Effective July 1, 2020, Duke University is a 100% tobacco-free campus. The use of all tobacco products, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, hookah, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, snus, and IQOS, is prohibited in any building or on any grounds owned or leased by Duke.

This policy is consistent with the policy covering all Duke Health facilities-including those in the Duke University Health System, the School of Medicine, and the School of Nursing, which are tobacco-free environments.

Policy Details

This policy does not require that tobacco users to quit, but they can no longer use tobacco-based products on property owned or leased by Duke. Duke recognizes that nicotine is a highly addictive drug that often requires support and assistance to successfully quit.

FDA approved nicotine replacement such as nicotine patches, gum, lozenges or inhaler are allowed and are encouraged as substitutes for smoking or vaping on campus. Many of these products are provided free-of-charge to the Duke community.

Duke also provides robust, evidence-based treatment to support for those who want to quit smoking.
