Your First 90 Days

The first 90 days of employment are called the Orientation and Evaluation period, or the Trial Period for those who are transfering internally. During this time, the staff member determines whether or not the position meets his or her expectations, and the supervisor determines whether or not the staff member possesses the knowledge, skills and necessary competencies to perform satisfactorily.

Orientation and Evaluation/Trial Period

When an individual begins work as a regular staff member at Duke, a required 90-calendar day orientation and evaluation period must be successfully completed. Your orientation and evaluation period starts on your first day of regular employment and lasts until you have completed 90 consecutive calendar days of regular employment status. A 90-calendar day trial period also applies to all current Duke staff that transfer into or are promoted to a new position. Additional information is available at the following web sites:

  • Orientation and Evaluation Period (New  Hires)
  • Trial Period (Transfers)

Required Training & Policies

Be sure to review important Duke policies and discuss any questions with your supervisor. You must complete required training and sign certain forms for your personel file as part of your employment.
