Severe Weather Policy Goes into Effect at Noon Today

RE: Severe Weather Policy Goes into Effect at Noon Today

The latest models indicate Hurricane Florence is trending toward Wilmington with landfall expected Friday morning, and the biggest potential for wind in the Raleigh-Durham area will be Friday afternoon with sustained winds of 20-30 mph and gust of 35-45 mph. Projections for total rainfall in Durham over Friday and Saturday have been decreased to 3-6 inches.

The Raleigh-Durham area may still see isolated flooding, downed trees and power outages, so individuals should take all precautions during the storm and continue to monitor the DukeALERT website and the Working@Duke Twitter account for the latest information.

As a reminder, the Severe Weather and Emergency Conditions policy will be in effect beginning at noon today through end of day Friday. A decision about extending the policy will be made and communicated before 5 p.m. today.

All regional school systems have closed today and Friday, and many flights at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport have been cancelled, including all flights for Thursday and Friday on Southwest Airlines.

During the storm, Duke Police and facilities crews will be prepared to respond as needed, but unless a situation is life threatening, crews may wait until after dangerous winds have subsided before responding.

Officials continue to monitor the storm models and projections and will send additional communications as conditions warrant.
