RE: Request for nominations for the 2017 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award
The prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award was established for colleges and universities in the South to honor persons with “fine spiritual qualities and a nobility of character.” It will be presented in April 2017 to a Duke graduating senior and to a Duke University or Duke Health faculty member, staff person, or graduate/professional student who exhibits the following qualities:
- Recognition of selflessness
- Generosity of service
- Nobility of character
- Person of integrity
- Depth of spirituality
Recipients receive an engraved medallion and a framed certificate that recognizes outstanding community service flowing from a life of integrity and spirituality. The award has found a special place among the ways in which Duke University and Duke Health honor its students, faculty, and staff for their significant service commitments.
I invite you to nominate any member of the Duke community whom you believe meets the criteria for this honor. The nomination form and additional information are on the Provost’s website (https://provost.duke.edu/awards-and-professorships/duke-university-algernon-sydney-sullivan-award/). Nominations are due March 6, 2017.
To recommend a member of the Duke community for their category, please submit the nomination form along with a letter of nomination in which you describe and evaluate your candidate’s “characteristics of heart, mind, and conduct as evidence of a spirit of love and helpfulness to other men and women.” The letter should state how the individual exemplifies the qualities listed above and cite specific examples of how this individual’s actions have directly affected the lives of others.
Faculty/staff/graduate student nominations should be submitted to Sam Miglarese, Office of Durham and Regional Affairs, Box 90433 or by email to sam.miglarese@duke.edu.
Duke undergraduate (seniors only) nominations should be submitted to Domonique Redmond, Duke Community Service Center, Box 90827 or by email to dredmond@duke.edu.
Please share this memo with your colleagues, students, and staff.
