"This picture is of my late mom, Mary-Jo Daughtrey with my two daughters, Jessica and Colby. My mom loved her grandchildren dearly. This was taken on Mother's Day 2007."

Photo Contest Ends Friday, July 11
The smiles in the photo are what Heather Rabalais likes to remember. The image, taken on Mother's Day in 2007, captures her mother Mary-Jo Daughtrey with her
granddaughters draped over her shoulders like loving book ends.
Rabalais' mother, died on January 1, 2008, after fighting a long and painful battle with arthritis and diabetes.
Last month when Rabalais heard about the contest seeking photos from Duke faculty and staff that represented why their health was important to them, she thought
of the photo from Mother's Day 2007. For Rabalais, the passing of her mother made her realize how important her own health was.
"When my mom died, I vowed that I would keep my weight down and exercise so that I would be around for many years for my children," said Rabalais, a staff specialist
in Pathology Research. "Since March I have lost 19 pounds, am exercising more, and can really feel the difference."
