New I-9 Form Issued
A newly revised I-9 form has been issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) and is scheduled to go into effect on April 3, 2009.
The most significant change to the I-9 form is the requirement that all documents presented during the I-9 form completion process must be unexpired. The changes also
eliminate several forms from List A that are no longer issued and adds two documents that may now be used during the verification process.
The current version of the form (has a revision date of "06/05/2007" at the lower right corner of the form) should be used through April 2. The revised I-9 form must be used
for all new hires and reverifications effective April 3, 2009. (Please note that employers may not reverify an employee by completing Section 3 of a previous version of the Form
I-9). Please use the new I-9 form (has a revision date of "02/02/09" at the lower right corner of the form) to ensure there is no delay in the hiring or reverification process as a
result of an invalid I-9.
The new I-9 form will be available on the forms section of the Duke Human Resources web site beginning April 3, 2009.
Additional information, including a copy of the new I-9 form, a question-and-answer document, and an Employer's Handbook can be found on Employment Eligibility Verification
Page of the USCIS website.
