Family Fun Run Caters to All Ages, Stages
You don't have to be a competitive runner to enjoy the Family Fun Run/Walk Duke holds each year as part of the Duke Appreciation celebration.
Heidi Cope, and her 2-year-old daughter, Emma, could tell you that.
Last year, they participated in the event's Baby Run for kids up to age 2. "Everyone else went blazing on ahead, and we finished last," said Cope, a genetic counselor at the Center for Human Genetics. "But she loved the medal she got. It is still hanging in her room."
Cope and her family also completed the 2.9-mile run/walk along the Al Buehler trail at a leisurely pace, with Emma in the stroller, and enjoyed the face-painting and other entertainment provided..
Professor of Biology Mohamed Noor is a little more serious about the running aspect. A regular runner himself, he enjoys the social atmosphere of the Family Fun Run/Walk so much that he and his 9-year-old daughter, Megan, have participated three years in a row.
"Megan and I have run together before, but last year's event was her record," said Dr. Noor. "She ran at least one-third of the way."
Noor said the family-friendly atmosphere makes the experience different. "We could run by ourselves anytime, but it is more fun in a group," he said. "It is great father-daughter time."
Bring your family to this year's festivities May 16. The 2.9-mile Run/Walk starts at 9 a.m. on the Al Buehler Trail at the Washington Duke Inn. The Baby Run and Toddler Trot begin at 10 a.m. In addition to the races, there will be a Jump Castle, face painting, balloon animals, a magician, and a special appearance of Stormy, the Carolina Hurricane mascot. The $2 suggested donation supports the Duke Children's Hospital.
