Stress is a fact of life. But when you have too much or it lasts too long, stress can take a physical and psychological toll on your health and well-being. It can aggravate existing medical conditions or create new ones. Family, finances and work issues usually top the list of causes of stress. It is important to find a healthy balance in your life. Learning how to manage your stress is your best method of treatment as well as prevention. Here are some resources and tips to help you manage your stress:
Classes
Classes are scheduled at your convenience. Most classes are 60 minutes
long but they can also be expanded or shortened according
to your interests. Classes are free of charge but require
a minimum of 12 participants (Small departments may be combined).

Stress
Management
- Coping With Change: For most people change is a difficult process. To thrive
during change, individuals must develop a direction so they keep in perspective what is
important. In this class, you will look at several models of change and develop a
plan of action.
- Relaxation Techniques: Stress takes a toll on our health and quality of life.
Learn skills to increase your stress hardiness and practice specific techniques to reduce
stress on the spot.
- The Power Of Positive Thinking: "Attitude is everything." is a familiar
saying with a great deal of wisdom. Learn the components of a positive attitude and
how to focus on the things you control.
- Time Management: As we try to do more with less resources, time management is
more important than ever. This class will cover setting priorities, organizing
information, and how to ensure that the most important priorities are taken care of.
Dealing with procrastination and interruptions are also covered.
Team Building
- Effective Communication: What style of communication do you use most often and
is it effective? This class covers different communication styles and stresses use
of "I" statements, good listening skills, and non-verbal communication.
- Conflict Resolution: Conflict happens in all work settings. How do you resolve
conflicts and not harm relationships? Learn conflict resolution skills along with how to
deal with difficult people.
SUCCESS OVER STRESS Resources
Were all doing more with less and it takes a toll on body, mind and spirit. Success Over Stress can help you learn some skills for
managing stress and gaining perspective on the stressors in your life. Since stress means different things to
different people, five topics are available. They are described below.
- Relaxation Techniques - Everyone knows they should relax but many of us dont know how. Find out how
several relaxation techniques work including deep breathing, stretching, and mindfulness.
- Out Smart Stress - The way we think about a situation says a lot about how we feel about it. Our
attitude is a powerful tool and one that can reduce our stress tremendously without costing
us a dime or much additional time.
- Time Management and Simplifying - So much to do, so little time. Many of us consider this our daily mantra. Find out
how you can make the most of the time you have as well as get started simplifying your
life.
- Balancing Work and Family - Do you have children at home or care for an aging relative? If so, you know the
pull of wanting to be two places at one time. Get some help balancing work and family
demands.
- Stress at Work - How can you manage an increasing work-load as well as the different personalities
you need to work with?

Personal Assistance Service is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke
University. The staff of licensed professionals offer assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help
resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and
