Duke provides several different death benefits for employees, in addition to
offering several voluntary, employee paid insurance programs that can help
insure that your survivors have adequate financial resources to pay debts and
help them be financially secure. Available death benefits include:
Survivor Benefit
In the event of your death while actively employed at Duke, your spouse/same
sex spousal equivalent or estate will receive one month's salary for each year
of fulltime continuous service up to a maximum of six month's salary,
providing you are full time at the time of your death. Duke pays the entire cost
of this survivor benefit program.
Business Travel and Accident Insurance
If you are involved in an accident resulting in death, dismemberment, loss of
sight, speech or hearing while out of town on Duke business, you are covered by
this policy which pays a maximum benefit of $200,000. Duke pays the entire cost
of this business travel & accident program.
Basic Life Insurance
Employees are automatically covered by Duke's Basic Life Insurance for
$10,000 if you are regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week. This
term policy also provides $10,000 accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
Duke pays the entire cost of this program.
Supplemental Life Insurance
Additional low cost term life insurance may be purchased by employees in the
amount of 1, 2,3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 times annual salary. Premiums are based on
coverage, age, and smoker/non-smoker status. Coverage may continue to age 95 and
is portable providing coverage has been in effect for at least 2 years. Payroll
deduction is available.
You may also purchase coverage for your spouse or same sex spousal equivalent
for up to $100,000.
Universal Life Insurance
Universal Life Insurance is a permanent type of insurance that builds cash
value. Payroll deduction is available. Premiums are based on coverage amount and
age. Family coverage is also available.
Personal Accident Insurance
Personal Accident Insurance is available to employees, faculty, and house
staff regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours a week, and provides
benefits in the event of disability, dismemberment or death due to an accident.
Coverage amounts range from $50,000 to $750,000 (cap of 10 times your annual
salary.) Coverage for family members (including your partner) is also available.
