These programs are available to help you protect your income and assets in
the event of a disabling illness or injury:
Long Term Disability Insurance
The full cost of long term disability insurance is provided by Duke for
full-time faculty and employees working 30 or more hours per week with three or
more years of continuous service (3-year requirement waived if you were covered
by a similar program through a previous employer within the past 90 days).
Should you become disabled, this insurance will pay 60% of your regular salary
and the employer contribution to the health care plan after four months of your
disability.
Long Term Care Insurance
Long Term Care Insurance is available to employees, faculty and house staff
regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours a week. This insurance covers
expenses incurred in skilled, intermediate and custodial care nursing homes as
well as home health care and adult day care expenses that are not covered by
your regular health insurance. Coverage for family members is available. Medical
underwriting (i.e. provision of medical information from your doctor) is
required for your partner's coverage. Medical underwriting for the employee is
waived if the employee enrolls within 60 days of initial eligibility.
Personal Casualty Insurance
Personal Casualty Insurance protects you in the event of an accident or
natural disaster that damages personal property that you own, or against
personal liability in the case of property damage or personal injury to another
person as a result of your actions. Policies available include homeowners,
renters, automobile and excess liability insurance. Metropolitan Insurance
Company offers these policies to Duke employees at a special rate through a
program called METPAY. Premiums may be paid direct or payroll deducted.
