Bill Phillips, manager of Duke's Benefits Administration and Communications, discusses Duke's Employee Tuition Assistance Program and the importance of giving employees the chance to further their education.
Employee Tuition Assistance Program
The Employee Tuition Assistance Program provides reimbursement of tuition for classes taken
at Duke or any other higher educational institution accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools with a physical presence in North Carolina.
This program provides reimbursement of tuition for a maximum of two classes per semester or quarter
(limit six semester classes or eight quarter classes per calendar year) up to $5,250
per calendar year for full-time employees with at least two years of
continuous service.
Applications must be submitted before the beginning of each class for which you are requesting reimbursement. Click here
for more information on how to apply.
Effective January 1, 2009 the following enhancements to the Employee Tuition Assistance Program will be implemented:
There will be an increase in the amount of the benefit from $5,000/calendar year to $5,250/calendar year.
There will be an increase in the allowed number of courses, from two courses per semester/quarter to three courses per semester/quarter, with a maximum of nine courses per calendar year.
Participants can also request a waiver to take courses at accredited schools in other states if the courses are not offered in North Carolina or if the employee's primary work location is in another state.
About the Program
The program consolidates the old Educational Assistance Plan, which
only waived a percentage of tuition for classes taken at Duke, and the recent
tuition assistance pilot program to provide reimbursement for classes taken
outside Duke.
The Employee Tuition Assistance Program is a direct result of
recommendations from the Women's Initiative to expand professional development
opportunities for staff and is based upon the recent pilot program. Because the
existing Educational Assistance Plan was limited to
courses offered at Duke, the new program provides more opportunity for faculty
and staff members to take classes at community colleges or other higher
educational
institutions that may be closer to home, offer classes at night, or offer
classes not available at Duke and receive reimbursement of tuition for those
courses.
