Benefits FAQ: Life Events
If my child is graduating from college, will this affect his/her eligibility for benefits as a dependent?
Yes, a child's graduation has a impact on several benefits including health, dental,
vision, reimbursement accounts, and life insurance.
Please notify the Human Resource Information Center (684-5600) within 30 days of or no later than 60 days after graduation to
remove the child from your health, dental, and/or vision policy. Once Duke HR is notified, your child will be sent information about
continuing their coverage under COBRA for up to 36 months. Please review
Life Events: Your Child Is Graduating
for more information.
If I leave Duke, what happens to my health/dental/vision insurance?
Under the federal law called COBRA, you may continue your existing health,
dental, and/or vision insurance for up to 18 months. You will be responsible for the full premium payment plus a 2% service charge. If you fail to pay the premiums, your COBRA coverage will be canceled with no option to reinstate. If you become covered under another employer's plan or Medicare, your COBRA coverage will terminate. A notice describing COBRA continuation rights is sent to employees who are leaving Duke. If you do not receive this continuation notice or have questions, contact the HRIC at 684-5600.
